The Educational Laboratory "Center for Oral History"

at the Faculty of History, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, has been operating since 2011. The Center was established after the introduction of the mandatory course "Oral History: Theory and Practice," which is taught to history students. The initiator and developer of the course and the educational laboratory was PhD, Associate Professor Mykola Borovyk. An essential practical component of the course is conducting interviews as part of research projects developed jointly by students and faculty members of the university. The first project was dedicated to the Second World War. We aimed to capture the testimonies of the last witnesses and participants of the war. The first interviews collected revealed that these materials were truly unique and should be accessible to researchers and anyone interested. Subsequent projects focused on Soviet everyday life, the events of Perestroika in Ukraine, the Euromaidan Revolution, and the current Russo-Ukrainian war. As of 2025, the Center has conducted 9 oral history projects, with over 700 interviews recorded. The Center also maintains an archive of audio and video recordings, which stores interviews collected by students during the course, as well as interviews from research projects recorded as part of master's and doctoral theses at the Faculty of History, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Currently, the archive contains interviews from four such projects. In addition to educational projects, the Center for Oral History is actively engaged in international cooperation. Its staff participates in and organizes numerous conferences, seminars, and workshops.
